Tomorrow is voting day and do you know what the best thing about that is? No more fricken political commercials! It seems with each election these commercials become nastier and nastier. I wish I could just block them with the v-chip installed in my TV.

I’m about to get political
New Jersey’s highest court opened the door Wednesday to making the state the second in the nation to allow gay marriage, ruling that lawmakers must offer same-sex couples either marriage or something like it, such as civil unions.
In a ruling that fell short of what either side wanted or most feared, the state Supreme Court declared 4-3 that gay couples are entitled to the same rights as heterosexual ones. The justices gave lawmakers 180 days to rewrite the laws.
The ruling is similar to the 1999 high-court ruling in Vermont that led the state to create civil unions, which confer all of the rights and benefits available to married couples under state law.
“Although we cannot find that a fundamental right to same-sex marriage exists in this state, the unequal dispensation of rights and benefits to committed same-sex partners can no longer be tolerated under our state Constitution,” Justice Barry T. Albin wrote for the four-member majority.
The court said the Legislature “must either amend the marriage statutes to include same-sex couples or create a parallel statutory structure” that gives gays all the privileges and obligations married couples have.
The three dissenters argued that the majority did not go far enough. They demanded full marriage for gays.

I’m sure everyone has heard about today’s ruling. At this point the NJ legislature has 180 days to figure out what to do. They basically have three options as far as I can tell:
1) Give gays and lesbians full marriage rights and call it marriage.
2) Give gays and lesbians full marriage rights and call it marriage, but pass a law limiting marriage in NJ to NJ residents.
3) Give gays and lesbians full marriage rights, but call it civil unions.
Call me pessimistic but I find it hard that they will grant #1 because NJ has no law making it illegal for out of staters to be married here. Thus it could create a problem for other states, even if they have a DOMA like law on the books. They sure as hell won’t pass #2 as NJ can’t give up the draw of Atlantic City and “Las Vegas” style weddings. Therefore we’ll probably end up with #3, civil unions.
You know what? If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck just call it a duck! I find it ridiculous to make a separate but equal marriage for gays and call it civil unions. Honestly what is the point? To try and appease the religious right? Pffft! If civil unions carry the same rights and privileges as marriage than every excuse for banning gays from marrying still hold true for giving them civil unions. Far too many times I’ve heard someone say “I’m against gay marriage because it opens the door to things like polygamy or marrying children. However I do support civil unions.” What a circular argument, as if the person didn’t even consider polygamists or pedophiles would argue for civil unions. The only reason I can fathom for saying one supports civil unions but not gay marriage is religion. I thought we had freedom of religion in this country? Several religions support gay marriage you know!
I think Wanda Sykes said it best in her last HBO special “If you don’t believe in same-sex marriage then don’t marry someone of the same sex!”

All those constitutional bans against gay marriage in order to protect traditional marriage are apparently working wonders . . . .
It is by no means dead, but for the first time, a new survey has shown that traditional marriage has ceased to be the preferred living arrangement in the majority of US households.
SNIP
The findings, which were released in August but largely escaped public attention until now because of the large volume of data, indicated that marriage did not figure in nearly 55.8 million American family households, or 50.2 percent.
SNIP
By comparison, the number of traditional households with married couples at their core stood at slightly more than 55.2 million, or 49.8 percent of the total.

I can’t wait to see how groups spin this one. Somehow I’m sure it will still be the fault of gays and evil family hating Democrats. I’ve already heard augments to the like in the past, that it’s Democrats faults that divorce laws were eased and it’s Democrats faults that the morals of our society have gone down hill. If a Democrat told a Republican to jump of a bridge would he? I guess he would, since that is the argument being made by these people.

I watched this show on VH1 about celebrities most embarrassing moments. George W. Bush, who I’m not really sure counts as a celeb, was featured. When asked by a German newspaper what his most memorable moment in office was, he responding by saying it was when he caught some huge bass while fishing. It’s times like this that I wonder how this man somehow became our president twice.

Today on the news I half caught some story about a Mozart opera in Germany that had to be cancelled. The problem? The opera featured props of the severed heads of Jesus, Buddha and Mohamed. The Muslim population went ape shit over this. If you recall recently there was a lot of controversy over some cartoons in papers in Europe, it’s a sacrilege to depict Mohammad in any kind of drawing or sculpture. Well the same thing happened in Germany with this play. Well the person reporting the news story went off on how this play was being shut down because the Muslims didn’t like it, it’s a classical opera, other religious figureheads are also being displayed, yada yada. Basically it was like she was saying “Muslims get over it.” Meanwhile, The American Family ASSociation is currently working a boycott of NBC. Why? Because Madonna has the balls to mock the crucifixion of Jesus in her concert, which NBC is planning to air in November.
You know what? If you don’t like something. Don’t watch it. If you feels it insults you or your faith, DON’T WATCH IT. The 700 Club insults me but instead of organizing a boycott to get it taken off the air I just don’t watch it!
BTW, I saw the concert, and what MOST of the reports don’t tell you is that while Madonna is on the “mirrored” cross and singing “Live To Tell,” above her is a number that grows ever larger. Eventually it reaches an absurd total and you are informed that this is the number of children orphaned by AIDS in Africa. Images are shown on television screens, as are numbers and websites where you can find out more information and how to help. Kinda changes the WHOLE scene doesn’t it? You know if it was Mel Gibson up there singing the song from “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” people would be saying “Wow Mel’s so great helping those kids out.” However since it’s Madonna they have to attack her.

PS Raging Rainbows posted a similar thread thismorning lol!
Releasing in select theaters at the end of this month is “Jesus Camp The Movie.” The movie follows three kids who attend the “Kids on Fire” camp in North Dakota. Here is the official synopsis of the film . . .
A growing number of Evangelical Christians believe there is a revival underway in America that requires Christian youth to assume leadership roles in advocating the causes of their religious movement.
JESUS CAMP, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, directors of the critically acclaimed The Boys of Baraka, follows Levi, Rachael, and Tory to Pastor Becky Fischer’s “Kids on Fire” summer camp in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota, where kids as young as 6 years-old are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in “God’s army.” The film follows these children at camp as they hone their “prophetic gifts” and are schooled in how to “take back America for Christ.” The film is a first-ever look into an intense training ground that recruits born-again Christian children to become an active part of America’s political future.
I’m sure the movie will be opening in Philadelphia, but I don’t know if I can make myself see it. I want to, but I’m afraid. I know this is one film that will anger me, as having religion pushed on me angers me enough as is. We have freedom of religion in this country, which also includes the freedom to have no religion if you choose. By the looks of this film it is showcasing the viewpoints of those who feel we need to have freedom of select religions.
You can watch the trailer at JesusCampTheMovie.com. I enjoy the contrast of the happy music and images with some of the words coming out of the people’s mouths. Hellfire and damnation? Thank you but no.

So I think I am the only person in America who did not watch Britney cry her eyes out to “sockless” Matt Lauer. I just couldn’t force myself to watch her. I will admit proudly that I actually like Britney Spears. Okay let me clarify, I think she makes some fun pop tunes that are great to dance to. Her ballads suck monkey balls and that Onyx Hotel Tour special on HBO? Click, I couldn’t stand it. I do like her dance songs and I loved playing her stupid videogame she put out a few years back. If you missed it, basically you were auditioning to dance with Britney and eventually got to face off with the pop-princess herself. It was basically a Simon says game, but I will never forget playing the thing and shouting obscenities at the TV and Virtual Britney as my roommate Danielle was on the phone with her mom saying “Mom, Dustin is cursing out Britney Spears.” Anyways, I like Britney, but she is dead to me right now. Dead dead dead until she drops that wife beater, socks with flip flops piece of white trash Po-Po K-Fed. DEAD!
I just got back from the dentist. I am SO HUNGRY but my mouth is numb all over. If I eat something I’m afraid I will do some serious damage to my tongue. I’ll just wait. The dentist was far less painful than it normally is. My mother went earlier in the week, perhaps she told him to double up on novocaine because he doesn’t use enough normally.
Driving back from the dentist I got a few giggles. First was from a commercial on the radio. In the DC area we have a food chain called Jerry’s Subs and Pizza. Well their commercials always feature celebrity voice impersonators talking about Jerry’s mouthwatering cheesesteaks. At the end of the commercial one of the “celebrities” always says “Celebrity voices have been impersonated.” Well the latest commercial features our current President George W. At the end of the commercial he says “Celebrity voices have been impersonation.” Hehehehe. The second thing that gave me a chuckle was a bumper sticker I saw on someone’s car. It said “Don’t pray in my school and I won’t think in your church.” Damn, it takes balls to drive around Virginia with that on your car! I’m sure someone will key that car or wreck it. I admit, sometimes I see bumper stickers on people’s cars and I’d just love to ram into the back of them.

Warning! Political post follows!
The Federal Marriage Amendment that would have protected marriage by making it illegal for gays and lesbians to marry failed to get the votes it needed in the Senate. This means because the threat of gays and lesbians getting married still exists that the divorce rates will continue to climb, adultery will run just as rampant, women will continue to have children out of wedlock and Jerry Springer and Maury Pauvich will continue to have plenty of candidates for their “I’m leaving you for (insert a living thing here)” and “I need a DNA test to find out who my baby’s daddy is” shows.
On a more serious note, perhaps those serious about protecting marriage should actually introduce bills and laws outlawing divorce, making adultery a punishable crime and perhaps forcing men and woman who have children out of wedlock to get married. Of course if that happened there would be such an uproar heard as it would be the majority’s marriage rights the government was legislating.
