Vacation From Vacation

After we finally got home from our vacation I was worn out! The last day of our cruise I felt my throat getting a little sore. Then we stayed a day in Miami and walked everywhere. This coupled with the fact that I actually didn’t sleep as much as I normally do while on vacation, I was ripe to get sick. So I’ve basically been taking a vacation from my vacation these past few days and been a lazy bum and sleeping a lot. The BF keeps bouncing on me saying “What’s wrong are you sick? Do you have a headache?” Thanks! He did at least put Christmas away. Before we left we didn’t put Christmas away. I hate putting it away, it’s so sad. He took care of most of it, I helped a wee bit.

Anyway, I have to snap out of being lazy, time to get back to work! Of course in about two weeks my friends Shannan and Nica will be here for an extended weekend visit. Along with Emily we are headed to New York for a night to see “Wicked” on Broadway and go to a club or something. I’m sure it will of course be the one weekend we hit below zero, because anytime I go to New York in the winter it always ends up being bitterly cold.

OMG Yes Please! Found at Hot Lunch

Thanksgiving and Movies

So tonight I ran out to the store and bought Cresents, mash potatoes and stuffing. I have turkey fillets, I figured I’d get a few more things for a classic dinner. This way I can cook a quick dinner up for myself if I need/want to. I bought a small Boston Creme for desert since it is what my mom usually gets for me. I don’t do pumpkin pie, we actually never did it in my house so I just don’t need it. Tried it once I think, I’ll pass!

More importantly, I bought movies! I picked up “Hairspray” tonight. I never got to see this in the theaters, so I was glad to get it. I love the original John Waters movie, love love love it. I own it, but it if comes on TV, I’ll still watch it. I saw the Broadway show years ago with the original cast, loved it. The movie? Loved it! It was so good. I just finished it and actually want to watch it again. The show took some liberties with the movie, and the new musical movie takes liberties with the Broadway show. A few numbers from the Broadway show were cut out, a few new numbers added in, the story was changed a bit as a result. Still a very excellent movie. I wasn’t too keen on John Travolta’s performance as Edna until the end number. Everyone else I really enjoyed overall.

I also picked up “Miracle on 34th Street” on DVD. I have it on VHS, but no VCRs really hooked up anymore. The DVD has the black and white and later faux colorized version. I figured what the hell! I’ll watch it after the parade on Thursday probably.

Xana Do It! Xanadu on Broadway Review

xanadu.jpg

So last night Emily and I saw Xanadu on Broadway. OMG It was amazing and just so much fun! For those who don’t know, or have blacked the experience out all together, Xanadu is based on the 1980 movie staring Olivia Newton John, Fred Astaire and featuring the music of ELO. The movie is about a Greek muse named Kira who comes to life from a mural. She meets Sonny Malone, who is a struggling artist. She becomes his muse. Sonny gets the idea to basically open up a roller disco and finds the place he wants to build it, an old theater/building called Xanadu. As it turns out, the builder (Fred Astaire) was inspired by Kira decades ago. So the two form a partnership and end up opening the roller disco Xanadu.

The show keeps the same basic story, but adds Kira’s sister muses to the story as other characters, as well her enemies. Two of the sisters set out to sabotage her out of jealousy and provide the villains for the show. Equally hilarious is the fact that two of the sister muses are actually played by men, who without the show seriously wouldn’t be half as funny as it is. Each actor also plays double parts in the show, which is why they have some male muses. You’ll just have to see it, I don’t want to spoil it.

Do you need to see the movie to enjoy the show? No. Honestly if you see the movie you probably won’t WANT to see the show, because the movie is just horrendous. However if you have seen the movie, it actually does make you appreciate the show a little more. For example the jokes about the movie in the show you’ll get, and it is interesting to see how they incorporate some of the songs and scenes from the movie into the show, such as the introductory number where they come alive from the mural. The one plus upon seeing the movie comes with the introduction of the Fred Astaire character. I felt in the show his introduction and his past with Kira (the boogie woogie tap dancing number) wasn’t clear. It was explained well after the scene to the audience, but if you hadn’t seen the movie it just comes out of no where and it’s kinda like huh?

The songs from the movie are there, as well as some extra ELO songs (such as Evil Woman). They are incorporated into the show amazingly well. Musically it’s great show and if you know the songs you’ll want to sing along. Kerri Butler, who plays Kira (Olivia’s character) is absolutely amazing. There are several instances where you literally laugh out loud as she’s singing because she’s purposefully overdoing Olivia’s wispy voice and huffs. The way they add the cheesy 80s “video effects” to some of the numbers is hilarious as well. Wind machine anyone?

One thing that struck me and many people was the size of the theater. The show is playing at the Helen Hayes theater, which is a very small theater for a show like this. This is a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because no matter what seat you get, your pretty much guaranteed a good one. It’s a curse because as this show probably becomes more popular, tickets may become more difficult to get because of the theater size.

There is actually seating on stage believe it or not. The stage is set up like a Greek amphitheater and for an additional fee you can sit on the stage. This has it’s pluses and minuses. You are a whole lot closer to the actors, and the actors at times sit with you and even interact with you. However at the same time you’ll see a lot of their backs as they are performing.

The show is not serious like other broadway shows, essentially a spoof Broadway itself and of the 80s. It is filled with references and jokes throughout poking fun at the decade. This is probably what makes it just so enjoyable and fun to watch. However at the same time, some of the jokes and references might go over people’s heads. For example if you don’t know what “Clash of the Titans” is, then the best joke of the show will be lost on you.

If you are in New York anytime soon, be sure to see this show. You’ll love it. If you don’t, something is wrong with you!

Home To Snow?

We finally got home tonight, late tonight. I have done the soap updates and am about to pass out now. Why I’m so tired I don’t know, but I am.

Before leaving I had complained we hadn’t really had any snow this season. It looks like a huge storm could be coming in overnight and tomorrow. We are driving home from my mother’s with the dogs tomorrow, hopefully it won’t be too bad and we’ll all get back before the ice storms hit.

I still have to get the cruise photos all up and updates on this past weekend. I don’t have many photos, those incriminating things are mostly on the other’s cameras. I’ll post what I can soon. As for stories? Hmm, well I was pretty good compared to my friends ;). For now I will just say the Phantom in Vegas was absolutely amazing, worth the trip alone if you are a Phantom fan. We also ended up getting the cheap half off tickets for Cirque De So Gay’s “Mystere” which was funny, bizarre and amazing at the same time. I really didn’t gamble much at all, mainly because I couldn’t find The Price Is Right machine I wanted to play. I did however happen to win about 60 dollars, but I lost maybe 25. I’m such a risk taker!

Honestly probably the best part of the whole weekend was that I did my best to make it a real vacation and not do much work at all, which let me tell you was harrrrrddddd to do!

I Love Spam!

Got back from New York tonight. It was a fun day. We arrived around 11am and had a hike from lower Manhattan to Uptown. We walked through The Village, Soho, Tribeca and some other neighborhoods before getting to Uptown. We had lunch at a nice little Irish Pub type place across from the theater. I was good, only one drink :). The show, Spamalot, was fantastic. Everyone was in it, no understudies for any of the main parts. I loved being able to see Tim Curry on stage, but I have to say Sara Ramirez as The Lady of the Lake was my favorite. We were pooped after the show and took a bus home. Normally I’d be up for doing a lot more, but after getting up at 6am on a Saturday and walking an hour in Manhattan, I was done for.

Anyways, go see Spamalot!

PS I didn’t take any photos. I have enough of New York as is. I just took a few on my camera phone, the drink photo below being one.

Now Is The Time On Dustin’s Blog When We Dance

As I blogged before, but the post was deleted along with the rest of my blog, the big 3-0 is coming up. It’s Friday, so the start of my birthday weekend has begun!

Today I was supposed to go see “The Brothers Grimm” with some of my friends. However that fell through. I have too much to get done before the weekend anyways, which is jammed packed.

Tomorrow morning I’m headed to New York with a friend. We may hit a museum in the morning or just chill in Central Park. In the afternoon we have lunch reservations (I’m forget the name of the place, she found it) and also have tickets for Spamalot. Oh, we’ll be stopping off at Toys’R'Us in Times Square too. I need to check out what fun things I might be able to pick up for my birthday.

Sunday is when the real party begins. The day will be spent feverishly trying to get the soap page updates and school work done. I’ll be going to dinner with my friends in Philly that night, a place to be decided still. Excellent martinis are a requirement though. I’m gunna be throwing them back like Nicole! Then we are out for a night of dancing and debauchery! I’ve found a place that mixes old school with new school, classic disco and today’s dance music. It looks to be a fun night! (Note to self, after dinner drink one bottle of water between every glass of booze my friends hand me or I’m going to be in real trouble!)

Monday I’ll probably be spending the day recovering, depending on how bad I was the night before! I’ll be sure to have a pizza in the fridge waiting when I get home Sunday night as that also always helps. Monday night I’m going out to dinner yet again. This is my official family birthday dinner.

Be sure to check back for photos and a full recap of the weekend. Actually some of the photos might take awhile because I’m probably taking a disposable with me on Sunday night. My current digital camera is a bit bulky, and I’m not risking losing it at a club.
